Dr. Hongkai Yu is the leading Director of the Cleveland Vision & AI Lab. He is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Cleveland State University since 2020. He was an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley from 2018 to 2019. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC (advisor: Prof. Song Wang, associate editor of IEEE TPAMI) in 2018. He earned his M.S. in Traffic Information Engineering and Control and B.S. in Automation from Chang'an University, Xi'an, China in 2012 and 2009 respectively. In 2017 summer, he worked at TuSimple, San Diego, CA as a Research & Develop intern for autonomous driving. His research achievements lead to 1 book chapter, 3 patents and more than 40 papers, including many prestigious conference and journal papers, such as CVPR, ICCV, AAAI, ACMMM, IEEE T-IP, IEEE T-MM, IEEE T-ITS, Transportation Research Part C, etc. He is a member of IEEE.
He received the Best Poster Award in Gamecock Computing Symposium and the award of Outstanding Graduate Researcher in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of South Carolina in 2016 and 2017 respectively. He received the Outstanding Reviewer Award of the journal Pattern Recognition Letters in 2018.
