- I drove 3,300 miles from Cleveland Ohio to Skagway Alaska in 5
days. It was pretty incredible. The best part was the Alaskan Highway
which starts in Dawson Creek in Canada.(the last 900 miles of my journey)
This highway goes over the Rocky Mountains in Canada and has some of the
most extreme driving conditions. I saw 3 bears and 1 moose on the side
of the road. :)
-
Having completed the 3,300 mile journey my Red, 1992 Nissan Sentra earned
it's merit badge after no serious problems.
-
The Whitepass railway went from Skagway Alaska into the Yukon and was
constructed to meet
the demands of the gold rush that occured at the very end of the 19th
century.
THis is the "Snow Plow No. 1", which has 10ft wide diameter "snow wheel"!
The engine was
dedicated soley to turning the massive wheel to dig through the large
amounts of snow that
accumulated during the winter time.

-
Several of these 900hp diesels pull the modern Whitepass passenger
trains.
(Sorry, I like trains. :)
-
Alternatively there is the hand power whitepass train:
-
There is no "road" to Juneau. However, Alaska has an excellent "Alaska
Marine Highway",
which consists of ships to ferry passengers (and cars) to many different
locations on
the coastline of Alaska.
Here on the left you can see the Kennicott arriving to pick me up at the
Skagway Terminal.
-
Don't forget folks, we're in MARSEC 1, so don't fool around. :)
- The Nissan Sentra was like, "What am I doing in this ship?!?!" :)
-
Here's a shot from the stern as the Kennicott was underway

As it turns out, my apartment is in bear country. Here is a black and
brown bear that
were passing by eating salmon berries (sort of like
rasberries/blackberries).
Sorry the shots aren't super great, it was getting dark.
