07.27.2004 Update!
- Everybody around me gets to eat all this great fresh Halibut, Salmon
(of various types), and Crab (Both King and Dunge). Finally this last week
I got my favorite: Chicken of the Woods. Don't be fooled, this bright
orange flesh is not chicken. Chicken of the Woods is a tree fungie that
after cooking has the consistency of chicken. It goes very well stirfried
or breaded.
- This weekend I spent at Shelter island again. After about a month of
not being able to get there I had to go to work on the electrical project.
On the way to Shelter we stopped to view a pod of about 12 humpback whales
bubble feeding. The whales go down to the bottom and start blowing bubbles
which push prawn up to the surface, and then they swim upwards and come
jumping part way out of the water with mouths open and catch the prawns.
- Here are some whale tail's:
- And another:
- Here are my Uncle Barney and Aunt Alice enjoy some grog-tea on the
sunset-watching bench. (Grog == 1/2 part water, 1/2 part rum)
- And what beautiful pictures I was able to get with the tripod I am
borrowing from my supervisor Rick:
- Another daylight picture:
- A nice one of the sunset:
- Wait - this isn't a photo! You're right, this is a schematic of the
current wiring I was able to do this weekend:
- My electrical project got it's own shack! This is the newly
constructed solar shack out on the muskeg that will house the two solar
panels for charging the 12 Volt batteries:
- A closeup of the solar panels:
- The kitchen is now fully wired with two 12 Volt outlets and the
existing light:
- One of the outlets:
- The fuse-box (It is functional but I need to put it in an enclosuer):
- You may be wondering... What good is 12 Volts DC? Everybody uses 120
Volts AC in their homes. Well in actuality there are lots of 12V
appliances that you can get for automotive and marine applications.
Currently we have lights, radio, cell-phone charger, soldering iron, etc.
However, occasionally you need that 120 Volts AC for convience. Here is
the invertor that plugs into one of the 12V outlets and provides 120 Volts
AC suitable for use with normal appliances:
- Here is the newly constructed stairway for the house:
- I decided to kayak back to Auke Bay:
- I turned around and took a picture of Shelter island (which is aprox.
9 miles long and 1 mile wide).
