07.13.2004 Update!
- So if you ever wondered were somebody showers when they live in a van down by the harbor, here is your answer: (Also I bum
showers from my friends, Nick and others)
- In one complex are 8 apartments, several stores, a bar (the "Squires Rest"), a laundry-mat, the southeast waffle company (where
istvan frequented for their somewhat shakey Wifi internet connection, and a thai restaraunt. Here's istvan coming at ya:
- I designed and fabricated a solid-state replacement for the vans broken turn signals. It is composed mainly of a 555 oscilator
(absolutely fabulous chips that are cheap and highly useful), several relays, some LED indicator lights, and two household switches.
It may look like a hack, but it is functionally sound.
- The dulcinea has been repaired!
- I went out to Eagle Beach again this weekend and found this fabulous field of wildflowers:
- The bees were in full force:
- For the weekend of July the 4th Istvan, Papo, and I flew out to Gustavus on a chartered flight. The pilot was very informal and it the experience was
highly enjoyable. The plane was a small Cessna.
- The views were amazing, but I didn't get too many great pictures because it was cloudy both ways:
- It's kind of "interesting" to see your pilot whip out his pda mid flight :)
- A nice fjord:
- The backage service is a little different for small flights. Here's my friend Jeffy (He also came on the flight), "Hey
Andy, I think this is your bag."
- So we stayed at Jeffy's house. Istvan, Jeffy, Papo and I came on the chartered flight. Rick and Ryan came by Kayak.
Bob & Agi's family and Gabe's family came by Alaskan Airlines. Here is a friend of ours, Miller, who came and picked us up in
his very old but working Dodge pickup:
- Jeffy's vehicle is a Toyota pickup that came with his property. Last time he was there he had car trouble, so we had just brought
a replacement alternator that I helped Jeffy install when we arrived:
- Here are some huskies pulling a float in the parade at Gustavus:
- The big event for the 4th of July at Gustavus is the pole. They take a long timber, cover it in Crisco, put money at the end, and
use a backho to hold it over a bridge. If you can get to the end and grab the money, it's yours! (If not, it's still good entertainment)
- Everybody loves Kelp dip!
- So there were twelve people packed in Jeffy's truck all weekend long when we had to travel, we felt like an immigrant van:
- Istvan and I hitchhiked out to Glacier Bay:
- The gas station is quite nice at gustavus:
- We got to see a nice view of mendenhall glacier on the way back:
- Landing in Juneau international airport on the way back:
- Unfortunately I just broke the gearshift on the van! (Stay tuned for the thrilling continuation next week....)
