Caving at New Trout Cave in WV (Spring 2006)
I went with the Carnegie Mellon Explores club to go caving at New Trout
Cave in West Virginia. Colin, Ivan, and Matt were also there. We spend
around 4-5 hours in the cave and were able to make it into "Thrush hall".

- The entrace to New Trout:
- Checking the map:
- A passage to the register room (near the entrance):
- This is a picture from in the dreaded "dusty crawl", looking backwards
at Ivan. Notice
that he is wearing a dust mask. (Highly Recommended) Also the
direction of up is noted
with the red arrow. This passage was several hundred feet long,
and you could not see very far ahead.
- This was taken from the same location as the last picture but
looking forwards. Can you see colin? He was less then 20ft in front of
me. :) The dust particles almost completely cloud him.
- Ivan was able to find the small hole that was orginally
discovered/dug in 1987 that leads to "Thrush Hall". After this point there
was a belly crawl for 200 feet to "Thrush hall" through a hole that was
not much bigger then my body.
- This is a picture after we left "Thrush Hall" and we were
headed back out to the entrance. I was waiting for people to
finish belly crawling back, the blue helmet is Colins:
- The roof of the cave near thrush hall and the dusty crawl is covered
in prehistoric fossils:
- Here is a closeup of a shell fossil on the roof of the cave:
- Finally dusty and beat up we arrived back at the entrance:
- Another shot of us at the entrance:
