PROGRAMS > MCIS > PROGRAM SUMMARY

MCIS DEGREE PROGRAM:

Each student is required to complete a minimum of 31 to 33 credit hours depending whether a thesis option is chosen. The program consists of 9 credit hours of core courses, an analytical course and 22 to24 credit hours of electives. The analytical course is counted towards the elective hours. In addition to the credit hour requirements, each student must also satisfy the breadth/depth requirements by choosing concentration tracks as described later in this page.

Applicants, who do not have an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a very closely related field, will be required to complete a preparatory program as outlined at the end of this page.

Core Courses: ( 9 credit hours)

  • CIS 600 (Computer Architecture) (4 credit hours)

  • CIS 601 (Graduate Seminar in Computer and Information Science) (1 credit hours)

  • CIS 620 (Comparative Operating Systems Interfaces) (4 credit hours)
Analytical Courses: (3 credit hours)

Atleast one analytical course msut be taken from the following set of courses:

  • CIS 590 (Foundations of Computing) (4 credit hours)

  • CIS 606 (Algorithm Analysis) (4 credit hours)

  • CIS 611 (Relational Database Systems) (4 credit hours)
  • CIS 666 (Topics in AI) (4 credit hours)

Electives : (22/24 credit hours)

Students not choosing the Thesis option are required to complete a minimum of 24 credit hours of electives.  If the Thesis option is chosen, number of electives drop to 22 credit hours of elective in addition to the Thesis.

  • CIS 699 is used for the Thesis. Please consult a faculty supervisor before you register for the Thesis course. The completion of the Thesis requires completing your research, writing the reseach report and passing the Final Oral Defense conducted by a Thesis Committee.

Breadth/Depth Requirements:

You must adhere to ONE of the following breadth/depth requirements.

  • Take at least 2 courses from at least 2 tracks, and at least 1 course from 3 tracks.
  • Take at least one course in 5 tracks.

Limitation on Special Projects and Independent Study:

No more than 5 credit hours of CIS 696 (Special Projects) will be accepted towards the 31/33 credit hours (this includes CIS 696 taken for student internship).

PREPARATORY PROGRAM: (35 Credit Hours)

Preparatory program is meant for students without adequate background in Computer and Information Science. The table below lists the required courses for the preparatory program. The prereq structure of these courses can be seen both from the table as well as from the diagram below. Depending on a student's background, all or some of the Preparatory Program may be waived by a department advisor.
