eLearning in IST Courses

Students can complete eLearning courses at home, work, or anywhere they please.

The Information Systems field (IS) offers several courses as part of the university's eLearning program. You may register for these courses if you are pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration in Information Systems (BBAIS), or if the course applies to your business major. Please read more about your degree requirements to ensure that the course is required for you to take.

How it Works

  • Each course is completed almost entirely through Blackboard. This includes tests, quizzes, and assignments.
  • Typically, there will be a one-time in-person orientation session to explain the course syllabus and answer any questions.
  • Communication with the course instructor is still encouraged, whether it be via email or arranging an appointment.
  • Textbooks and access to supplemental software are still required.

Knowledge Required

To ensure students will be successful in an online class they need to possess basic computing skills. A student registered in the online class must be able to:

  • Use the keyboard and mouse effectively;
  • Understand, navigate, and use the standard Windows desktop;
  • Use a storage device such as a jump drive, CD, floppy diskette, etc.;
  • Use an Internet/email browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc.;
  • Zip and Unzip files;
  • Send and receive email;
  • Attach files to an email;
  • Open email attachments;
  • Download and upload files between your computer and a Web site.

The above tasks are not explained by an online course instructor. If you feel uncomfortable with any of the areas above, please contact the campus help desk prior to registering for the course so that you may acquire the appropriate skills. If you cannot perform ALL these activities, you should consider enrolling in a traditional section of this course.

Technical Requirements

Student registered in an online class may require the following:

  • Better than dial-up access to the Internet. Tasks, such as uploading and downloading assignment files, PowerPoint files, interaction on Blackboard such as taking exams or doing discussions or chat rooms, are prohibitively time consuming if a student has only dial-up access.
  • Personal set of headphones or speakers attached to his/her pc in order to listen to any audio portion of the course materials.

A high-speed Internet connection can be access on campus at any of our labs, or if you rent a laptop from Mobile Campus. For more information on other possible technical requirements, please see the eLearning technical requirements page. If you need help getting started with Blackboard, see the Student Guide for Getting Started with Blackboard CE 6.
