Department of Computer and Information Science

Academic Programs

The department of Computer and Information Science offers several high-quality degree programs for students:

In addition, the department supports a concentration in Information System Auditing (ISA). A student can specialize in ISA along with a major in Accounting:

Bachelor of Science in Computer and Information Science (BSCIS)

The BSCIS is the University's degree program in Computer Science. It is designed to prepare the student for either a professional career which uses the theory and practice of computing or for graduate work in computer science. The BSCIS program provides the student with a strong foundation in computer science. The curriculum reflects current computing trends and incorporates current topics to enable a CIS graduate to be competitive in the marketplace. Because of the broad range of research interests of the faculty, there are numerous opportunities for students to participate in special projects or research in computer science-related areas.

Bachelor of Business Administration with Information Systems (BBAIS)

The Information Systems Major (IST) in the BBA degree program prepares students for careers in information systems by focusing on the use of current information technology within the context of an organization. Information Systems as an academic discipline encompasses two broad areas:

  • acquisition and management of Information Technology (IT) resources and services
  • management of IS infrastructure to support the organization’s processes
  • development of business oriented application's software

Graduates of the IS major will have combined preparation in business core courses and applied computing. They will not only have the necessary managerial skills to solve business problems in functional areas, but also technical knowledge to develop and support information systems of any scope.

Accelerated 4+1 Program: Master of Computer & Information Science (BSCIS / MCIS)

This accelerated program enables students to earn both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Computer and Information Science in 5 years. The program allows a BSCIS student to take up to 12 credit hours of designated CIS graduate courses and count these courses both toward the Bachelor's and the Master's degrees in CIS.

This program will be an incentive for a successful CIS undergraduate student to pursue graduate studies in CIS at Cleveland State at a considerable cost savings.

Master of Computer & Information Science (MCIS)

The Master in Computer and Information Science (MCIS) is a professional degree program that is designed to combine a thorough education in computer science, with applications in the areas of business, engineering, mathematics, or other relevant fields. The program emphasizes advanced programming using the latest technologies. At one end, it focuses on the theoretical capabilities of computing including problem solving and algorithms. At the other end, the MCIS program deals with techniques and design of advanced computing applications in various areas. Graduates of the program will be prepared for immediate employment in business, industry and government, or pursue higher studies in the discipline.

DBA with IST Major (DBA)

The Doctor of Business Administration with IST major (DBA) is a research oriented degree program that emphasizes management of Information Systems. The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program prepares a student for an academic career in teaching and research at the college or university level. The IST major is one of the majors included in the college's doctoral program. All students are expected to complete several core courses in research methodology before starting their specialization in Information Systems.

Informations System Auditing Concentration (ISAC)

Information System Auditing provides accounting graduates (or others interested in auditing) necessary skills to audit controls in the information technology applications and systems of an organization. Role of an Information System Auditor includes evaluating and encouraging organizations to maintain appropriate standards, procedures and controls for information systems. Importance of auditing information systems has grown over the years due to rapid advances in information technology (IT) as well as the unprecedented growth in IT use globally in businesses and governments.
